Fear Talents Chosen

Have you ever had your mind busy with lots of little bits of information?  I must be careful not to let them get confused.  Take the headline of this entry for instance.  If you take it all together, it conveys one message.  But these things have not been given together.  Each one, individually,  is being used to teach me.

Fear - God is placing this word in front of me often.  It is mostly accompanied by the word not.  For instance, today's Proverbs 31 Devotional was "The Truth About Fear" focused around 2 Timothy 1:7.  Just 15 minutes before that I had been praying from The Power of a Praying Parent Book of Prayers by Stormie Omartian for my son's mind.  Can you guess what it was focused around?  Yes, 2 Timothy 1:7.  Then, I followed a link off of a blog and found it before my face again.  All this is just today.  Over the past several weeks, there have been numerous times that God has placed those words before my eyes.  I rest in them.

Talents - This was one of the topics of discussion at last night's service.  Am I honoring God with my talents, gifts or abilities?  Or, am I using them to only get by here on this sod?  My husband and I have been discussing what I could be doing.  I want to use my talents and abilities to support him and the business.  I want to be more involved in the day to day activities of the business so that he doesn't have to shoulder that alone.  But we wonder if I should instead try to find a job outside the home.  Do I even know what talents God has gifted me?  This topic will be bathed in prayer.

Chosen - This was emphasized in the morning service.  Before I ever accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior, He chose me.  He made me in His image and for His honor.  He called me to acknowledge Him and know Him.  I was then given a simple choice - believe or not.  How about you?  Have you rejected Him so often that He no longer calls you?  Dear Friend, I hope not.

(Father God, thank you for a sound mind.  Thank you for clarity of thought.  Thank you for choosing me even though I feel unworthy.  Thank you for abilities to write and think.  Father, I ask that you guard my mind.  Help me to recognize and dismiss Satan's lies.  Help me to fill my mind with the truth of your word.  You have not given me confusion and I praise your name for the blessings of this day.  I pray that I honor you with all that I do.  In the power of Jesus' name I pray.  Amen.)

Perspective

"I did not get the job," she posted, "The good news - God has a better one in mind for me."

This posting was quickly followed by several replies...  "I'm sorry,"  "So sorry,"  was the recurring theme.

REALLY?

Go back and read her post.  She did not get the job and she knows God has a better one in mind for her.  YES!  AWESOME!  Congratulations!  Hallelujah!  Praise Him, Praise Him!  GREAT!  WONDERFUL!

How can we be disappointed that God has something better?  How can we be sorry that He wants her to have the right job?  How can we be so sorry that He desires to give her the best?  How can we be sorry that He "is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think?"  (Ephesians 3:20)  How can we question His sovereign ability to provide her needs even before we ask? (Matthew 6:28)

Yes, we can be sensitive to the need for a job but I hope our perspective is a heavenly one so that we can recognize His handiwork in guiding and leading her and her family to the blessing He intends.  Let's not get distracted by the needs and stay focused on the Provider.  What about you?  Did you focus on the first part of her post or the latter part of her post?  Is your perspective of the worldly or the Godly?

(Father God, help me to have the proper perspective in all things.  I thank you Lord for the way you provide for our needs.  In the name of Jesus, I pray that you will open the door to the right job for this friend.  Give her a job that honors you and I thank you for that job.  Amen.)

Garden Lessons: Light

I discussed some the things I've learned already in my previous "Garden Lessons" entry.

Continuing, I've learned that the new plant needs light very close to it.  When light is close to it, it doesn't try to stretch out seeking any light it can find.  You see, if the light is too far away, the plant becomes spindly and weak.  The stem has no strength to hold the new leaves as they develop.  What spiritual truth is there here?  A young Christian needs to be mentored by a strong Christian, one who is mature in faith.  And, the mentor needs to stay close to keep the young from stretching out and becoming weak.  Without the closeness of mentoring, the new Christian can reach out to any light source, even false light sources.  When the new Christian stretches too far, it results in a weakened faith that may eventually fail.  Like I said last time, a mentor is critical.

Another thing I've learned is that the light needs to be very close to the plant in order for the plant to foster a good root structure.  Without a good root structure, the stem and leaves loose their support.  If I keep the light just a few inches away from the top of the plant, it keeps the growth of the plant on track.  It gives the plant the time it needs to build the root system under the soil.  What spiritual truth lies here?  Yes, that's right, a new Christian has to develop a good basis of faith.  A good basis comes by hearing the Word of God.  Really, all it takes is sharing scripture with other Christians verbally.  Sometimes, it's as easy as reading scripture aloud.

True faith, true light, true growth, true anything is found only in a relationship with THE Creator, Sustainer, Judge, Truth - the great I AM.   I am so glad He is taking time to teach me through his creation even though the effects of sin are great upon it.  I'm excited to see what's next.

(Father God, thank you.  Thank you!  How incredible it is to examine the plants and how marvelous are the details and planning that went into them.  What great mercy that even after thousands of years, these sustaining plants continue to provide for me.  You are holy, holy, holy.  Praise and glory to You for ever.  In the name of Jesus I pray.  Amen.)

Prior Posts - Penguins

Sometimes when I just can't put coherent thoughts on a page, I like to go back and revisit what I've posted.  It's good for remembering and being thankful.

I'm a collector of penguin things.  I'll often reference penguins in my writings.  I love seeing penguins in real life.  I love hearing stories related to penguins.  Got anything to share?

(Father God, thank you for the quick reminder of so much just by perusing what has been written already.  In the name of Jesus I pray.  Amen.)

Garden Lessons: The Pot, the Soil, and the Depth

As I've been attempting to start some plants for our garden, I've sought the spiritual parallels of what I've learned from our adventure.  It's not been a great adventure yet.  There's a lot of failure going around right now. However, I believe I have some things to learn from this and that's its purpose.  So, there will be a series of blog entries on "Garden Lessons."

First, I've learned that the pot you start with should be the pot the plant stays in until you are ready to put it in the ground.  Moving the plant from a small pot to a larger pot is just too much of a shock.  What kind of spiritual parallel can I see?  A new Christian should be left in the church in the class in which she was saved.  God placed that person exactly where he needs to be.  If you are saved in a small church, stay there for awhile.  You'll see why soon enough.

Next, I've learned that the soil in the pot cannot be packed.  It has to be loose enough for the roots to develop.  Yet, it can't be so thin that there is nothing to grasp.   What kind of spiritual parallel can I see here?  The new Christian should not be overwhelmed with sources of learning such as reading, doctrine, study, analysis, commentaries, evangelism classes, works, etc. all at once.  Nor should she be left without any source of learning.  The new Christian should be established with a starting level Bible reading plan ,a book of sample prayers or simple devotionals, and a basic doctrine study; thus, making his source of learning just right.

I've also learned that the seed has to be planted at the right depth.  If the seed is not far enough in the soil, the plant doesn't have to work to get to the surface and the root is not deep enough to support future growth.  This little bit of effort on the part of the plant creates a stronger plant.  But, if the seed is too deep, it can rot or be choked off from ever reaching the surface.  The spiritual parallel here is similar to the previous one.  The new Christian has to do some reading, praying, and study on her own or there is no foundation for faith.  And, he must not become bogged down in endless questions and fairy tales that result in a faith that rots and dies.

Now, someone has to get the pot, add the soil, and plant the seed at the right depth.  What spiritual parallel can I see here?  A new Christian needs a mentor.  A mentor is critical.  I can't stress this enough, fellow Christians.  Don't lead a person to Christ then leave her stranded without any direction!  Don't lead a person to Christ then abandon him!  This baby Christian needs you.

(Father God, thank you for the lesson you are teaching through the plants you created.  I'm so excited to learn more about you in this process.  Help me to put each new nugget of truth into practice.  In the name of Jesus, my Savior, I pray.  Amen.)

Longing

It started as a bump and commotion from the dining room window.  Our cat had tried to go through the window after something.  I got up to check on her and she was intently watching the small wood pile on the patio.  She was transfixed.  "Uh-oh," I thought.

So, my son and I let her out the back door and over to the pile she scampers.  She sniffs delicately around and around.  She knows something is in there.  My mind was racing.  "I hope it's not a snake.  I don't think I'd like that much," ran swiftly across my brain.  Then, I saw it - a little bitty mouse.  Relief flooded my muscles.

We moved the wood back and forth until she saw and pounced.  Our fat, nine-year old cat caught that mouse.  And, dropped it.  It took off!  (DUH!)  We rousted it out from under the wheel barrow and she was on top of it again.  She caught it, threw it, and caught it again.  Our cat was having a moment.  Finally, the poor mouse was dead and she finished her tiny meal.

Today, I find myself longing for the day when the cat and mouse will have a salad together.  I grieve over the effects that our sin has on this natural world.  My cat wasn't created to eat mice.  She was created for the honor and glory of the Creator.  How do I know this?  "...All things were created by Him and for Him."  (Col. 1:16)  Does the Bible tell me that the cat and mouse will have a salad together?  Not in those words.  Isaiah prophesied of the time when the leopard will sleep with the baby goat and lions will eat hay.  (11:6, 65:25) This coming time of peace has no hurt or destruction.  YEA!  Oh, that's what I'm longing for!!!

(Father God, how marvelous are your works!  How awesome are your ways!  How high are your thoughts!  I praise you!  I praise your name.  Thank you for the promise of coming peace.  Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus!  This I pray in your holy name, Amen.)

It's Spring!

Yes!  I love when the weather starts warming.  It gives me new life and energy.  I am not motivated by the cold. Okay, maybe the cold motivates me to fill up on peanut caramel clusters and hibernate in a warm cave.  But, that's about it.

I've been trying to start garden plants indoors this year.  In some ways, I'm having great success but now I'm hitting a rough patch.  My tomatoes and peppers all sprouted and got their first set of true leaves.  I moved them to a bigger pot and now they are beginning to fail.  I so want this garden to succeed so that I can help my family cut down on the grocery bill this year.  I also want to be able to share with others the fresh bounty that God provides.

I've been reminded (AGAIN) that it's not about me.  So, I'm leaving my garden to God's direction.  He will provide the bounty and move me to do with it as He desires.  I trust Him.

(Father God, thank you for the reminder of all the times you've provided in the past and how that I can simply recall those times to know that you will provide today.  It's been a joy to see what you've done so far and I can't wait to see what comes next!  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.)
